Guidance
Our world is full of opportunity! Opportunities to make a difference, to own a business, to learn a new skill. Today, more than ever, you really can be anything you want to be. But many of today’s careers require additional training beyond high school. The great thing is that training can come in a variety of packages. Some packages include college. Some a trade school or apprenticeship. Whatever your package looks like, the resources on this page can help you get there.
College or Career?
Think about the types of careers/majors that interest you. Start an interest inventory at Indiana Career Explorer, and after you’ve taken all their career assessments, explore the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Learn a little about the type of training you need to meet your career goals.
If college is in your future, make a list of possibilities and visit their websites to learn more. Narrow down your choices, and take advantage of our college days to plan a visit. If an apprenticeship is what you need, search O*Net’s database to find one that interests you.
Finally, start taking steps in the right direction. Choose a pathway that fits your goals. Learn to craft a winning scholarship essay or resume. Practice your interviewing skills, and begin exploring ways to pay for your needed training.
FAFSA
Attention, seniors! Please remember that you must file the FAFSA by April 15. There is no exception to this deadline. Every student planning to take classes next year needs to file the FAFSA. The FAFSA determines financial aid and student loans.
FAFSA Challenge
Every year we challenge South seniors to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before the annual deadline. This application gives you access to federal grants, loans, and work-study programs to use in paying for college.
Every student considering college should complete a FAFSA, regardless of where you want to attend or how much money your parents make.
Scholarships
In addition to the scholarship resources listed on this page, guidance maintains a list of scholarships for various colleges, universities and student interests. This information is emailed to students and is announced through the guidance newsletter. See Mrs. Hess or Mrs. Bridges for more details.
Entrance Exams
It's important to take the SAT/ACT during the spring of your junior year. This allows you to qualify for dual-credit classes at SDHS and will help as you prepare your college applications.
Pay attention to registration deadlines as you prepare for your exam(s). Don’t wait until the day before a deadline to register, or you may be taking your test miles from home! When registering, use SDHS’s school code (151370) to send us a copy of your scores. We’ll add your score to your official transcript. You can also send your scores directly to the college you wish to attend.
